Midorima was taken aback. Maybe he had been lulled into a false sense of security by the man's blabbering on about a sport that involved the orange ball he was holding, but out of everything he never expected a compliment.
Or a look of awe. The government agents and scientists and lackeys had a sort of greedy hunger to their eyes but now he was wondering what sort of complicated heiarchy humans had. This man clearly was working for them, but was not reacting in a familiar way.
Mer did not blush, but one of his large tail fins twitched, throwing sand up into the water almost in contempt. His fortune told him a gift bearing orange, a color rarely seen in the ocean would be his savior, but he didn't want to just...accept it from a human.
"I don't need your fancy words. You have trapped me here in this cage against my will."
Takao could probably spend all day talking about basketball, he loves it with all his heart. But now he has an upset mer-creature on his hands and the guilt in his heart overrides even basketball.
One, no matter what he definitely is not like the other people here, two, he meant it, they weren't fancy words, he honestly just responded without thinking about what he said. The awe-struck eyes were all for this amazing creature in front of him and genuine.
As is the way they cast down, sorrow filling them for a moment at the way he has been treated. He squeezes the ball a few times, it comforts him, then as he worries at his bottom lip, he flicks the ball lightly to the mer-creature.
"I know this sucks, it's not right for them to do this to you. But I hope you can believe, I just want to help you. What they want to do, it's not what I came here for." He wanted to study, to learn to admire the creatures they found and return them home, he was led to believe that was their goal as well.

Surprise, surprise, it wasn't.
